Quinci Baker
b. 1994, Washington, DC
My multi-media works combine synthetic hair, accessories, and various craft and repurposed materials in an exploration of collective memory and identity. Through a space of fantasy, play, and abstraction, I fill in gaps and give form to intangible losses in personal and collective histories. I utilize the ability of inanimate objects to embody an essence, spirit or ethos in my practice. I am also inspired by the secret languages that develop through shared experiences and the mnemonics that elucidate a cultural identity.
In the fabric of time, the existence of one thread sedates, compliments, or contrasts another. I often use repetition and modularity to emphasize the dependence of a collective body on the individual. My own social condition is my entry point in exploring the overlaps of macro and micro perspectives in time and space.
